Speaking on Thursday, Oshiomhole argued that actions by local crude oil companies aimed at undermining the Dangote Refinery constitute economic sabotage deserving of the ultimate punishment.
The senator representing Edo North revealed that the Nigerian Senate is also considering a review of the contentious Petroleum Industry Act. He made these remarks in Abuja during the inaugural Prof Emeka Umerah’s public lecture, themed ‘Nigeria Yesterday, Today and a Prosperous Future’.
Recent media reports have highlighted the difficulties faced by Dangote Refinery, one of Africa’s largest oil plants, in securing local crude oil supplies.
Oshiomhole expressed his frustration, saying, “Despite the fanfare surrounding the inauguration of Dangote Refinery, Nigeria’s crude oil is still being exported while the refinery is denied allocations. Instead, they prefer to export to Europe, forcing Dangote to import crude from America into Nigeria.”
He added, “These individuals deserve to be hanged. If we don’t act, they will bring us all down. It will take a president with extraordinary courage to address this. They are importing diesel even when the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) warns of excessive import pressure. President Tinubu celebrated the refinery’s achievement as it was his vision to establish a free trade zone in Lagos, which Dangote utilized for his factory.”
Oshiomhole also noted, “Just yesterday, we debated and passed a resolution in the Senate. No sovereign company within a sovereign nation should be unaccountable to the people. If we can scrutinize our president publicly, no appointee should be above the law. Their actions aim to ensure the Dangote Refinery does not succeed.”
