Osimhen Ends Champions League Goal Drought As Galatasaray Stun Lille 4-2 In Dramatic Comeback
Nigerian international Victor Osimhen ended his UEFA Champions League goal drought on Wednesday, October 21, as Galatasaray staged an impressive comeback to defeat Lille 4-2 in France, while Manchester United endured a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Como.
Osimhen sealed Galatasaray’s victory shortly after the hour mark, finishing a swift counterattack to score his first goal in the competition since February. The victory also gave the Turkish champions their first win of the campaign.
Galatasaray made a dream start, taking the lead just 66 seconds into the encounter after Yunus Akgun capitalised on a defensive mistake by Lille defender Alexsandro.
However, Lille responded quickly through Soriba Diaoune, who rounded goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir to equalise in the seventh minute before scoring again in the 39th minute from a rebound to put the hosts ahead.
Galatasaray restored parity shortly before half-time when Aleksey Batrakov found the net with a header after Lille failed to mark him effectively.
The visitors completed their comeback seven minutes into the second half, with Lucas Torreira heading home from a corner. The effort took a final touch off Lille goalkeeper Berke Ozer before crossing the line.
Osimhen then delivered the decisive moment, finishing a counterattack to secure all three points for Galatasaray.
The goal was particularly significant for the Nigerian forward, who previously scored 18 goals in 38 appearances for Lille during the 2019/2020 season before moving to Napoli in 2020. He has also recorded seven goals and three assists for Galatasaray this season.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Osimhen’s return to the Champions League scoresheet provided a major boost for Galatasaray as they seek to build momentum in the competition.
Meanwhile, Manchester United suffered another disappointing European outing, losing 4-1 to Como in a result that intensified scrutiny of manager Michael Carrick.
Argentine midfielder Nico Paz opened the scoring after just 118 seconds and later added his second goal of the match. Tasos Douvikas extended Como’s advantage after receiving a pass from Paz, before Jacobo Ramon headed in the fourth goal to complete an emphatic performance by the Italian side.
United conceded within the opening two minutes for the second consecutive major European match, having also allowed an early goal against Atletico Madrid eight days earlier.
Carrick attempted to change the course of the encounter through several substitutions. Matheus Cunha and Andrey Santos were withdrawn at half-time, while captain Bruno Fernandes was later replaced by Joshua Zirkzee.
Zirkzee scored a stoppage-time consolation after converting a cross from fellow substitute Amad Diallo, but the late goal did little to change the outcome.
Elsewhere in the European fixtures, Sporting lost 3-2 to LASK, Real Betis defeated Feyenoord 1-0, Inter secured a 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk, and Bayern Munich drew 2-2 with Arsenal.
Aston Villa beat Viking 3-1, Club Brugge defeated Lens 3-0, while Real Madrid recorded a convincing 4-1 win over RB Leipzig.
