Osun Assembly Addresses Controversy Over Amotekun’s Legal Authority To ProsecuteThe Osun State House of Assembly has dismissed claims that the recently amended law establishing the Osun State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, grants the corps the authority to prosecute offenders. In a release issued on Monday by Olamide Tiamiyu, the Chief Press Secretary to Speaker Adewale Egbedun, the Assembly clarified that Section 4(1)(k) of the amended law mandates the Amotekun Corps to forward completed investigation files to the office of the Attorney-General for further legal action. The Assembly stressed that this aligns with Sections 174 and 211 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which vest prosecutorial powers exclusively in the hands of the state and federal Attorneys-General.

The Assembly further explained that Amotekun was created as a response to growing security challenges that have overwhelmed traditional law enforcement agencies, rather than being a political tool. It cautioned against the politicization of security matters, emphasizing that such actions could undermine the corps’ efficiency and erode public trust.

“The law was enacted to enhance crime deterrence and ensure justice for the people of Osun State. Politicizing Amotekun’s operations is not only counterproductive but potentially harmful,” the statement read.

The Assembly urged those with concerns or questions about the law to seek clarification through the proper channels rather than spreading misinformation. Amotekun, described as a “child of necessity,” was established to address security gaps and protect the lives and property of Osun residents.

Concluding the statement, the Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the effective operation of the Amotekun Corps and called on the public to disregard false claims and support initiatives that prioritize the state’s security.
