Chairman of OCSC, Waheed Lawal, issued this statement on Thursday amidst a protest by civil society organizations addressing the rising cost of living and economic challenges in the nation.
Protesters, rallying under the banner “OSOGBO ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, President Bola Tinubu, let the poor breathe,” marched from Nelson Mandela Freedom Park to the renowned Olaiya-Overhead Bridge in Osogbo.
Security personnel were present at the protest location to maintain order and prevent disturbances or violence.
Lawal emphasized, “President Bola Tinubu must go beyond providing millions of Naira as palliatives to governors and focus on addressing the plight of the hungry citizens, finding lasting solutions to alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians.”
The OCSC Chairman criticized the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for withdrawing its support from the planned two-day nationwide protest, expressing disappointment at the last-minute reversal after both labor unions had initially agreed upon the protest.
Lawal stated, “I would have preferred the TUC to reconsider its decision because the two-day proposed protest is in the best interest of all Nigerians. If TUC fails to join, we support NLC to proceed with the strike.”
Director of the Ola-Oni Centre, Wale Adebisi, highlighted that the Osogbo protest serves as a precursor to the nationwide protests scheduled for February 27 and 28. Adebisi urged President Tinubu to uphold commitments to Nigerians post-fuel subsidy removal.
The spokesperson for The Osun Mastermind, Ayo Ologun, criticized the absence of CNG buses, the lack of an increased national minimum wage, and the high cost of living under the Tinubu administration. Ologun urged swift action to fulfill promises made to organized labor for the betterment of all Nigerians.
