Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has issued a warning of a N5 billion defamation lawsuit against the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. In a statement released on Wednesday, Mr. Kola Olabisi, the APC’s Director of Media and Information, referred to a viral video in which an unnamed PDP chieftain spoke about bombing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Osun State. The chieftain reportedly expressed concerns that the PDP might not secure victory in the upcoming election.
According to the APC, the chieftain was quoted in the video as saying, “It is the example of what the APC would do in Osun State that it did in Edo State last week. Whoever wants to die, let him die. There ought to have been a clandestine arrangement where one or two chartered bomb-laced helicopters would have been stationed in the neighbouring Delta State from where they would have successfully bombed the INEC office, where close to 150 and 200 innocent people, including the Resident Electoral Commissioner, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, the Returning Officer, and presiding officers, would have met their untimely death.”
The APC claimed that the PDP chieftain had previously suggested similar violent tactics during the 2022 elections, asserting that such measures would be necessary to secure victory in 2026.
Olabisi expressed concern that neither Governor Adeleke nor the PDP leadership had condemned the video, implying their complicity in the alleged plans. He urged the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the matter and hold accountable those behind the purported scheme.
In response, Mr. Olawale Rasheed, the spokesperson for Governor Adeleke, condemned Olabisi’s statements as reckless and unfounded. Rasheed announced that Adeleke’s legal team would pursue a N5 billion lawsuit against Olabisi unless he retracts his allegations.
“The allegation is reprehensible, baseless, and defamatory,” Rasheed stated. “The governor has ordered his lawyers to review the situation and demand retraction as he did not and has not in any way planned or plotted any attack on either INEC or any electoral official. Failure to retract the offensive publication will result in a potential libel suit.”
Rasheed further emphasized that many APC members had made threats about violently manipulating the 2026 elections, stating that the governor remains undeterred by such comments, confident in the support of the people of Osun State.
