The Lagos State Government has announced the receipt of a €120 million support fund from the Dutch government to advance its waste-to-energy project in collaboration with the Dutch firm Harvest Waste Consortium. Wahab detailed that the initiative aims to convert a portion of Lagos’ waste into electricity at the decommissioned Epe landfill, processing between 2,500 to 3,000 tons of waste daily out of the 13,000 to 14,000 tons generated in the state. “The waste-to-energy project with Harvest Waste is supported by the Dutch government with approximately €120 million, and we have designated the decommissioned Epe landfill for this purpose,” he stated.

He further explained that the Lagos State Government is actively decommissioning several landfills to create space for new waste management projects with international private companies, including Jospong Group and Closing the Loop.

Wahab noted that significant dumpsites such as Olusosun and Solous 1, 2, and 3 are in advanced stages of decommissioning, with new landfills being established to support these initiatives. “Once these partnerships are fully operational, the government expects that only 3% to 4% of the waste generated in Lagos will end up in landfills, aligning with the state’s goal of transforming waste into valuable resources and promoting sustainability,” he added.

In a related development, last year, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) revealed its collaboration with C40 and G-ORBIT Enterprise to convert organic waste into biogas for electricity generation. “LAWMA has partnered with C40 and G-ORBIT Enterprise on a waste-to-energy feasibility study focusing on converting organic waste generated from markets into biogas for electricity,” the agency noted in an October 2023 post on X.
