Abdulazeez, a resident of Iwo, Iwo Local Government Area in Osun State, endured physical assault by police personnel during the 2020 coronavirus lockdown. In response, she filed a lawsuit against the Nigeria Police and the Inspector-General of Police in a Federal High Court in Osogbo, seeking the enforcement of her fundamental human rights.
In 2021, the court ruled in Abdulazeez’s favor, finding the police guilty of violating her constitutional rights. The court awarded her N2 million as exemplary damages and N3 million as general damages. Despite repeated notices from the victim, the police have yet to pay the judgement sum three years later.
On January 30, Lukman addressed a letter to Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, seeking approval to present the petition for legislative intervention. The House granted approval for the petition to be presented.
Lukman, in conversations with journalists, expressed disappointment with the police’s lack of cooperation throughout the legal proceedings. He emphasized his commitment to ensuring that the victim receives the compensation mandated by the court.
Surprised by the police’s failure to comply with the court order, Lukman asserted that a law enforcement agency should not disregard a judicial pronouncement. He voiced confidence that the House leadership would use its legislative powers to address the matter.
Lukman underscored the condemnable nature of assault, particularly when directed against women, and pledged to pursue the case diligently. The petition will be reviewed by the House Committee on Human Rights, with a hearing date yet to be scheduled.
