Otti Administration Shifts Focus Away From Employment Agenda

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has emphasized that the immediate recruitment of new personnel into the state’s civil service is not a top priority for his administration. Speaking during a monthly media interaction session in Umuahia, the governor clarified that the focus remains on addressing existing challenges within the civil service before considering new hires.

Governor Otti highlighted an existing employment embargo and expressed concern over the persistently high number of personnel within the civil service, despite previous verification exercises. He lamented the substantial monthly wage bill of approximately four billion naira for both the local government and the state.

While acknowledging the need to enhance the remuneration of civil servants, Otti underscored the importance of optimizing workforce productivity. He indicated a willingness to address underperforming personnel within the service, albeit acknowledging the procedural challenges involved in personnel exits under civil service regulations.

The governor outlined ongoing efforts to bolster the capacity of civil servants through initiatives such as the establishment of the Civil Service Commission and the appointment of new leadership positions. These measures aim to ensure that personnel are adequately trained to leverage their skills for improved performance.
