NANS Raises Alarm Over Alleged Unlawful Detention Of Polytechnic Students By EFCC In Osun State

The Osun axis of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Joint Campus Committee, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, of unlawfully detaining some students of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State.

According to reports, EFCC operatives from the Ibadan Zonal office conducted a midnight raid on the students’ hostels in Ede, arresting an unspecified number of students.

In a statement signed by Taiwo Ogungbe and Farouq Afolabi, the Chairman and General Secretary of NANS JCC, Osun axis, the union condemned the act and demanded the immediate release of the detained students.

They warned that failure to release the students would prompt NANS to take action against the agency.

The statement emphasized the disappointment with EFCC’s actions despite assurances against nocturnal raids by the agency’s chairman. It highlighted a similar incident less than a month prior, where individuals in EFCC uniforms raided another school at night, with no perpetrators brought to justice.

Expressing concern for the psychological impact on the students, particularly during exams, NANS urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene for their prompt release.

Meanwhile, the Management of Federal Polytechnic Ede stated that it was yet to confirm the identities of the students allegedly arrested by the EFCC. The institution confirmed a sting operation by the anti-graft agency in Owode-Ede but clarified that it had not received any official communication from EFCC regarding the arrests.

The institution urged the public to remain calm as they await further developments and promised to keep them informed.
