Our Church Has Outgrown Fans – Pastor’s Alleged Response Sends Donor Out Of Church Group
An X user identified as @Mikeliberation has sparked online discussions after sharing an account of how a church member allegedly left his church’s WhatsApp group following a disagreement over a proposed donation.
According to the account, the church member had noticed that worshippers were often uncomfortable during services because of the heat, with some reportedly using handkerchiefs to fan themselves.
Concerned about the situation, he allegedly offered to donate ₦500,000 towards the purchase of 10 standing fans, announcing in the church’s WhatsApp group that he would transfer the money to the church’s account.
The offer reportedly excited other members, who responded with prayers and messages wishing him blessings for his generosity.
However, the situation allegedly took an unexpected turn when the pastor responded that the church no longer needed standing fans and should instead have air conditioners.
The pastor was quoted as saying, “Our church has outgrown fans. God said you are capable of providing air conditioners.”
The post claimed that the pastor’s response left members of the WhatsApp group silent for about three weeks.
It further alleged that the pastor later sent another message to the group, stating, “We don’t serve a poor God. Give, and you shall receive.”
According to @Mikeliberation, the church member eventually left the WhatsApp group the following morning.
The account has generated reactions online, with social media users discussing expectations surrounding church donations, financial generosity and how religious leaders should respond to offers made by members.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the incident has also renewed conversations about the importance of appreciating voluntary contributions rather than placing additional demands on donors.
