The governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umar Bago, is facing intense criticism following the emergence of a video showing him tossing naira notes at his supporters. In the footage, he can be seen standing on the roof of a moving vehicle, showering the notes as his supporters scramble to collect them.
This action has incensed many citizens of the state, including members of civil society, opposition parties, and religious leaders. They have condemned the governor’s behavior as unacceptable, inappropriate, and a form of disrespect towards the national currency.
Speaking on the matter, Mohammed Abdullahi Jabi, the North Central Zonal Chairman of the Campaign for Democracy and Human Rights Advocacy Civil Society of Nigeria, expressed dismay at the governor’s apparent disregard for the consequences of his actions. Jabi highlighted concerns that such behavior could perpetuate dependency among the populace.
Similarly, Yahaya Ability, the Niger North Zonal chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), denounced the governor’s public display of wealth and attributed it to the alleged failure of his advisers. Ability emphasized the importance of governing with dignity and respect for the electorate.
Umar Danladi Abdulhamid, a former Commissioner for Information and Strategy, also criticized Governor Bago, suggesting that his actions may contravene the constitution and urging him to find more responsible ways to engage with the public.
The widespread condemnation of Governor Bago’s actions underscores the need for public officials to demonstrate prudence and sensitivity in their conduct, particularly when handling public funds.
