**A Dark Reign**

Halilu Sububu, also known as Halilu Jammare, was a notorious figure whose reign brought terror to the affected states and beyond. Born to a mother from Niger Republic and a father from Jajjaye village in Zamfara, he became infamous for his connections with terrorist groups across the Sahel, including in Mali, Senegal, Niger, and Burkina Faso. Sububu was well-known for supplying arms to terrorists in northern Nigeria, often boasting about it on social media.

He orchestrated numerous violent attacks, including a 2021 assault on a military base in Katsina that resulted in significant casualties among soldiers. Operating from a stronghold in Zamfara’s forests, he expanded his criminal enterprise into illegal gold mining in Bagega and surrounding areas, controlling mining sites and holding local communities hostage.

Residents of Sokoto, Niger, and Kaduna lived in fear under his tyranny. Reports indicate he commanded extensive territory in the Sububu Forest, orchestrating countless kidnappings, killings, and terror attacks that left the region in constant anxiety. Parents warned their children of his brutality, and farmers who didn’t pay bandits for safe passage to their fields lived in perpetual fear of ambush.

**Neutralized at Last**

On September 12, 2024, Nigerian troops launched a daring ambush in Kwaren Kirya, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara, resulting in Sububu’s death. This operation marked a pivotal moment in the fight against banditry and terrorism in the region. The troops had been tracking him for months, successfully breaching his heavily fortified camp near Bagega. The operation not only eliminated Sububu but also took out 38 of his associates, demonstrating the troops’ bravery and commitment.

**Seized Firearms**

In the aftermath, security operatives recovered five AK-47 rifles from the neutralized bandits. These assault rifles are known for their reliability and simplicity, featuring a long-stroke gas system that performs well under adverse conditions. They fire 7.62-mm rounds at a cyclic rate of 600 rounds per minute, capable of both semi-automatic and automatic firing modes.
