The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) enters the election amid allegations that the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) is leveraging federal resources and police power to secure victory. The PDP has reported the arrest of its leaders across the state and has raised concerns about potential further arrests, urging Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to release those detained, stop the harassment of its members, and guarantee a fair electoral process. The PDP, which declined to sign a peace accord, also called for the reassignment of Edo’s Commissioner of Police, Nemi Iwo, and Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Onuoha Anugbum, citing their alleged ties to former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who opposed the PDP in the 2023 Presidential election.

Conversely, the APC is demanding the arrest of those responsible for the recent killing of a police officer connected to its candidate, Senator Monday Okpebhelo. The APC claims that the suspects remain at large and pose a threat to the election. Governor Obaseki has criticized the police for allegedly targeting innocent individuals and called for thorough investigations.

A prominent election monitoring group, Yiaga Africa, has expressed concerns about potential violence in eight local government areas, highlighting the election’s occurrence amid “economic hardship, security volatility, and distrust in state institutions.” Dr. Aisha Abdulahi, chair of Yiaga Africa’s Edo 2024 Election Mission, raised alarms over voter inducement and vote-buying practices reportedly employed by multiple political parties.

She stated, “Yiaga Africa notes the tense and volatile political climate for the election, characterized by strong-arm tactics and violence. The activities of cult groups and political thugs have surged, exacerbated by the availability of small arms. We are particularly concerned that politicians may resort to violence and intimidation to suppress voter turnout in key polling units.”

Yiaga Africa has identified eight local government areas as hotspots for potential violence, including Ikpoba/Okha, Oredo, Egor, Ovia South West, Ovia North East, Esan South East, Etsako West, and Etsako East, emphasizing the precarious security environment.
