Outrage Erupts Over N9.8bn Rehabilitation Budget For Presidential WingCivil society organizations have expressed outrage over a recently awarded N9.8 billion contract for the rehabilitation of the Presidential Wing at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The contract, granted to Julius Berger Plc by the Federal Capital Territory Administration, aims to address deteriorating link roads and facilities, with a completion deadline of six months.

Shehu Ahmad, Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, detailed the scope of work, which includes repairs to the access road to the presidential kitchen, the hangar for the presidential aircraft, and the holding center for visiting dignitaries.

Ahmad explained, “The road from Bill Clinton Drive to the Presidential Wing is in disrepair, along with other facilities showing signs of distress.” He emphasized the need for upgrades, including lighting and access improvements.

In response, the Democratic Socialist Movement criticized the decision as frivolous and insensitive, highlighting a perceived disconnect between government priorities and the struggles faced by ordinary citizens. National Secretary Peluola Adewale stated, “While the government asks Nigerians to tighten their belts, it continues to indulge in luxury.”

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights echoed these sentiments, calling the project unnecessary in light of widespread poverty and suffering among the populace. Emmanuel Olowu, CDHR Chairman in Osun State, lamented, “People are hungry and dying while the government prioritizes luxury over the welfare of its citizens.
