Outrage Turns To Action: Senate Demands ₦200m Compensation For Toddler Killed By NDLEA
The Nigerian Senate has proposed a ₦200 million compensation for the family of a two-year-old boy, Ivan Onosereba Omhonria, who was fatally shot by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) during a raid in Delta State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The tragic incident occurred on July 13, 2023, when NDLEA agents stormed a suspected drug hotspot in Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area. A stray bullet fired during the operation struck Ivan in the abdomen and grazed his younger brother, Eromonsele, in the eye. Ivan died from the gunshot wound, while Eromonsele sustained serious injuries.
In response, Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, filed a petition on behalf of the grieving family in July 2023. The petition was referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen.
Presenting the committee’s report during Thursday’s plenary, Senator Imasuen revealed that all parties involved had been summoned and questioned. He noted that the NDLEA claimed it lacked the resources to fund Eromonsele’s treatment abroad.
Nevertheless, the committee recommended that the NDLEA should cover all costs associated with Eromonsele’s medical care, preferably overseas, to ensure his vision is restored. Additionally, the committee advised that the federal government, through presidential approval, provide ₦200 million in compensation to the affected family.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio condemned the incident and put the recommendations to a voice vote, which received overwhelming support from the lawmakers.
