Oyetola Calls For Strict Enforcement Of Waterways Safety Code After Kogi Boat AccidentThe Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has called on the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to enforce compliance with its Waterways Transportation Code and take legal action against offenders. The minister also expressed his condolences to the Kogi State Government, the families, and victims affected by the recent tragic boat accident in Kupa Ebbe Village, Kupa South Local Government Area of the state. A merchant boat capsized on Friday in the waters of Ebe Community, leading to the loss of lives.
āI extend my heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones in this unfortunate incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time,ā Oyetola said. He reaffirmed the governmentās commitment to ensuring safer operations on Nigeriaās waterways.
Oyetola urged NIWA to ensure stricter enforcement of the Waterways Transportation Code and prosecute those found violating safety regulations. He further emphasized that the ministry is working closely with the Kogi State Government and other relevant stakeholders to reduce the risk of future accidents.
The minister commended the quick response by NIWA and the Kogi State Government, which resulted in the rescue of several survivors. He also called on boat operators and community leaders to avoid boat trips during unsafe hours, particularly between dusk and dawn, to prevent further tragedies.
Oyetola stressed that ensuring safety on the waterways is a collective responsibility, and the government cannot tackle the issue alone.
