Osuagwu explained that the Press Centre, located on the Owerri-Port Harcourt Road, was originally provided to journalists by the then military governor of Imo State, Commodore Amadi Ikwechegh, along with all official documentation and titles. In a statement issued on Saturday, Osuagwu expressed his outrage over reports that certain individuals, after receiving payments, are attempting to sell the Press Centre.
He described the move as “absolutely outrageous” and “insulting” to the sensibilities of journalists in Imo State and across the country. “Such a move is not only disrespectful to journalists but also to their noble friends and patrons,” he said.
Osuagwu called on both the state governor and the police commissioner to intervene and stop what he called “the rascality” of those involved. He further noted that he had learned the matter was already in court and urged that it be allowed to run its course. “Why the hurry to lock up the centre before the court has ruled?” he asked.
He concluded by asserting, “We say no to the illegal and criminal sale of the Imo NUJ Press Centre. Governor Hope Uzodinma should not allow such criminality to take place under his watch.
