The Oyomesi in Council, the traditional kingmakers, filed a suit marked HOY/38/2023 in the Oyo State High Court to prevent Governor Seyi Makinde from rejecting Prince Lukuman Gbadegesin, whom they claimed was unanimously selected during a meeting on September 30, 2023. This legal action has created a standoff between the kingmakers and the governor.
Sources have indicated that the state government has ordered a new selection process to ensure the right candidate is chosen. Unconfirmed reports suggest that an announcement about the new Alaafin might follow a recent visit by some Oyomesi to Governor Makinde.
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo, stated, “The governor is not available at the moment. He has traveled, and no announcement about the new Alaafin can be made until he returns. The fresh selection process will commence soon.”
A government insider, who requested anonymity, confirmed that the new process aims to ensure a proper selection. Another source emphasized that the government is committed to preventing any further conflict over the appointment, though the announcement will follow due process.
When approached, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, responded, “I’m not aware of the details at this time.”
