The President made these remarks at the Presidential Villa during a meeting with Mr. Richard Mills Jr., the newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, who presented his Letter of Credence.
Tinubu highlighted the strong historical relationship between Nigeria and the United States, citing past contributions from American diplomats like Ambassador Howard Jeter during Nigeria’s transition to democracy.
“We aim to strengthen cooperation between our nations on shared democratic values and goals,” Tinubu stated. He reflected on Nigeria’s past opposition to military dictatorship and his own involvement in peaceful protests, emphasizing that such activism should never lead to property damage.
The President reiterated his commitment to maintaining Nigeria’s 25-year record of uninterrupted democracy and stressed that while demonstrations are a democratic right, they should not cause harm or destruction.
Tinubu also welcomed the U.S. State Department’s recognition of Nigeria as Africa’s largest democracy and called for increased U.S. engagement in Africa. “Nigeria is prepared to lead by example as Africa’s largest democracy and seeks a mutually beneficial partnership with the U.S. to advance our economic growth and democratic values,” he added.
Ambassador Mills expressed U.S. support for Nigeria’s democracy and pledged to back Nigeria’s expanded role on the global stage.
