PANDEF Cautions Against Linking Niger Delta To BiafraThe Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has firmly distanced the Niger Delta and South-South geopolitical zones from the ongoing agitations for an independent Biafra. In a statement released on Wednesday by its National Youth Leader, Donben Donyegha, PANDEF strongly warned that any attempt to involve the Niger Delta in the Biafra movement would be met with stiff resistance.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HEREā¶
Donyegha emphasized that the Niger Delta region has no intention of seceding from Nigeria and condemned those attempting to associate the region with the Biafra agitation as insulting the people of the area. He described such actions as provocative and offensive.
The statement read, āWe, the Pan Niger Delta Forum, the apex socio-political body of the region, categorically reject any attempt to include communities from the Niger Delta or the South-South geopolitical zone in plans to secede from Nigeria. We are not part of this Biafra agitation. Any continued attempt to involve our region in the so-called Biafra Republic is both provocative and disrespectful to the leaders of the Niger Delta.ā
PANDEF stressed that the youth of the region would resist any such efforts and warned that further inclusion of Niger Delta towns or territories in Biafra plans would not be tolerated. āThis is a direct insult to our leaders and fathers,ā Donyegha added. āWe are hereby warning all those behind this action to desist immediately. Niger Delta is not Biafra.ā
The group reiterated its belief in a united Nigeria where all regions have equal opportunities, and called for the decentralization of resources so that states can manage their own resources while contributing to the national framework for security, diplomacy, and sovereignty. PANDEF called for a Nigeria where every subunit can develop at its own pace, in line with the vision of the countryās founding fathers, as envisioned in the 1964 constitution.
Despite the changes brought by the 1999 constitution, PANDEF vowed to continue engaging with both the federal and state governments to address the grievances of the Niger Delta people. āWe will persist in our efforts to ensure that the vision of our founding fathers is realized, especially with our National Chairman, Amb. Godknows Igali, a respected intellectual of international repute, leading the charge,ā the statement said.
PANDEF concluded by urging both Nigerians and the international community to recognize that the Niger Delta is not and will never be part of any secessionist agenda, including Biafra. The forum called for maturity and restraint from agitators, whether within Nigeria or abroad, stressing that such divisive actions should cease immediately.
