Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Sunday, Igali stated that the Supreme Court’s intervention was crucial in restoring order.

“The state is calm, and this ruling was expected. As a party, we have always emphasized that the rule of law must be upheld, as it ensures stability, peace, and development,” he said.

Igali further remarked that the court’s decision has resolved previous conflicts in the state, including the political disputes between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the state assembly, led by Martins Amaewhule.

PANDEF Calls for Calm Amidst Political Tensions

Responding to Governor Fubara’s remarks following the judgment, Igali reiterated PANDEF’s call for peace and urged the youth to remain calm, despite any initial shock.

“From PANDEF’s perspective, as the leading sociopolitical body in the South-South, we stand with the governor in urging calm, especially among our youth. Many were surprised by the ruling, but the Supreme Court has carried out its constitutional duties,” Igali said.

He added that PANDEF has been actively pursuing peace talks outside of the courtroom and would continue to seek a peaceful resolution.

Concerns Over Federal Allocations and Governance

Ambassador Igali also addressed the issue of federal allocations, warning that withholding funds from states could have severe socio-economic repercussions.

“There is a heavy reliance on federal allocations for governance, particularly for social services. Any delay or withholding of funds could impact essential services such as healthcare, education, and public infrastructure, putting vulnerable citizens at risk,” he said.

Igali urged the Supreme Court to consider the broader consequences of financial restrictions on state governments, encouraging a careful review where needed.

‘Rivers State’s Stability Is Critical’

Emphasizing the importance of Rivers State, Igali stressed that the state’s stability is crucial to Nigeria’s economy.

“Rivers State is vital—it is the heart of the South-South and the oil belt, contributing significantly to the national economy. Any instability in Rivers State affects all of us,” he said.

He concluded by reiterating that PANDEF had called for a reassessment of certain legal rulings that could potentially escalate tensions in the state.
