The rescue operation was carried out by the non-governmental organization Women Aid Collective (WACOL), as disclosed in a statement by its media officer, Egodi Igwe, on Monday, January 22, 2024. According to Igwe, WACOL received a report on September 28, 2023, concerning the abduction of a 13-year-old girl, identified as Miss N (name withheld).
The victim’s parents had reported the incident to WACOL, narrating how Prosper, posing as a missionary in their village, abducted their daughter. Allegedly, Prosper vanished with the minor, claiming he was taking her to open a bank account.
Despite the parents’ efforts to trace Prosper and their daughter, they were unsuccessful. It was later revealed that the pastor had turned the minor into a sex slave, subjecting her to constant violations and abuse.
WACOL promptly contacted the Enugu State Police Command, initiating collaboration with law enforcement to track down the perpetrator and rescue the child. Throughout the investigation, the church authorities distanced themselves from Prosper, stating that he was no longer associated with their service. They acknowledged his past employment but disavowed any support for his heinous crimes against the innocent child.
After an extensive search, Prosper was apprehended at a border town in Umuahia, Abia State. Igwe expressed dismay at the prevalence of such incidents, emphasizing the unacceptability of robbing girls of a safe environment to thrive. She highlighted the need to protect girls from those who should be safeguarding them, even in religious spaces.
