This appeal was made in a communique released following the forum’s meeting in Kano on Saturday. The statement, signed by the forum’s National Chairman, Ambassador Bature AbdulAziz, highlighted the necessity of establishing “an acceptably reviewed Constitution.”
The forum urged the Constitution Review Committee to engage with citizens to ensure the success of the review process. It noted that key issues impacting the nation—such as federalism, state police, and local government autonomy—are currently under discussion. Thus, involving the public is essential to foster a credible process.
“We believe it is vital for members of this forum to participate in the process, as we have valuable contributions to offer as elders,” the statement read.
The forum also emphasized the need for Nigerians to have the opportunity to provide their input on issues presented to the Constitution Review Committee to guarantee adequate representation and a successful outcome.
Additionally, they called on the committee to educate citizens about its operations, the topics under consideration, and the procedures for contributing to the review process.
“We trust that the chairman and members of the Constitution Review Committee are individuals of proven integrity who will take the necessary steps to improve our constitution,” the forum concluded.
