PDP 2027 Presidential Ticket: Sowunmi Shares Insight On Atiku’s Possible Pairings
PDP 2027 Presidential Ticket: Sowunmi Shares Insight On Atiku’s Possible PairingsSegun Sowunmi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has shared his insights on potential combinations for the party’s 2027 presidential ticket. Speaking about the race for the presidency, Sowunmi highlighted the importance of understanding Nigeria’s ever-evolving political landscape, especially when considering a candidate who could effectively challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In an interview with Daily Post published on Friday, Sowunmi was asked to assess the likelihood of an Atiku Abubakar ticket paired with either Peter Obi, Nyesom Wike, or Bukola Saraki. While he acknowledged that no election is ever the same as the previous one, Sowunmi stressed that four years could bring significant changes in voter sentiment. He emphasized that a successful candidate must engage deeply with the electorate, beyond just relying on social media trends.
Sowunmi reflected on the possibility of an Atiku-Obi ticket, noting that while both men garnered substantial support in the 2023 elections, it’s not guaranteed that their combined popularity would translate into success in 2027. He cautioned that voter behavior and preferences could shift, particularly as voters may align with one candidate over the other, based on individual appeal.
“Every election is a fresh start,” Sowunmi said. “You can’t just assume that because a certain combination worked before, it will automatically work again. The dynamics, the issues, and the people’s sentiments change over time.”
He further discussed the possibility of a ticket featuring Atiku and Wike, suggesting that such a combination could have been successful in 2023, but only with a well-tested strategy. However, he noted that political assumptions about such combinations should be carefully examined, as they are far from certain.
On the Atiku-Saraki ticket, Sowunmi expressed concerns about the regional balance, as both Atiku and Saraki are from Northern Nigeria, which could pose challenges in securing a broad national appeal. He suggested that the party might need to look beyond just regional affiliations and consider broader, more inclusive strategies for choosing running mates.
“I think it’s difficult to have an Atiku-Saraki ticket because both are from the same region. The PDP might consider pairing either of them with a strong candidate from the South to balance the ticket,” Sowunmi explained.
He also emphasized that the party should focus on identifying credible and capable candidates, stressing that the 2027 election would require more than just popularity. “Political parties cannot assume victory based on name recognition alone. Elections are deeply scientific and strategic. We need to understand what the people are really saying and be ready to present a candidate who can genuinely resonate with the electorate,” he added.
Sowunmi further acknowledged that the party’s success in 2027 would depend on hard work, deep analysis, and engagement with Nigerians to understand their true concerns and priorities. “The voters will decide the outcome, but we must ensure the PDP presents a credible candidate who can unite Nigerians and offer real solutions to their challenges,” he said.
He concluded with a call for the party to thoroughly analyze the political landscape and avoid assuming that past successes or popular names would guarantee a win. “We have to carefully assess the political realities of the time and make our decisions based on a true understanding of the electorate’s needs and desires,” Sowunmi stressed.
