The PDP made this assertion through a statement released by Kennedy Peretei, the state Publicity Secretary of the PDP.

Peretei pointed out that these chairmen are still receiving salaries due to the absence of the state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, who is recuperating in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The PDP stated, “The multifaceted ramifications of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s absence from his official duties due to illness have once again come to the forefront.

The former local government chairmen, whose three-year terms ended in August this year, continue to draw salaries from the state treasury.”

“The troubling situation persists because the governor, who has been dealing with his health issues, has not appointed new political leaders, and there is no consensus among the government factions on how to fill these crucial positions.

Additionally, the former council chairpersons have refused to surrender their official vehicles despite the dissolution of the councils by Lucky Aiyedatiwa during his tenure as acting governor.

The level of impunity demonstrated by Akeredolu and his associates in Ondo State is unprecedented.”

The PDP expressed its concern about the governor’s absence at President Bola Tinubu’s meeting with the National Police Council in Abuja, where all governors or their deputies were present.

They also noted the lack of Ondo State’s representation at regular National Economic Council meetings in Abuja since Akeredolu’s illness.

The PDP, Ondo State chapter, emphasized its determination to resist any attempt by Akeredolu’s handlers to exploit this situation and push the state further into distress through legal means.

In response to these allegations, the former local government chairmen strongly denied them, describing them as “baseless falsehoods.” Augustine Oloruntogbe, the immediate-past chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Ondo State, asserted that none of the former chairmen had any financial ties to their councils after leaving office. He also clarified that they vacated their positions on August 30, 2023.

Prince Kayode Aroloye, a former chairman of the Idanre Local Council, demanded that the PDP retract the allegations and issue an apology within 24 hours, warning of potential legal consequences if they failed to do so.
