PDP Crisis Deepens As Factional Chairmen Engage In Public ClashAs the crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues, the new factional acting National Chairman, Yayari Mohammed, has called on the rival National Working Committee (NWC) led by Umar Damagum to address security threats. The PDP has faced internal strife since 2022, resulting in a division within its NWC. This division deepened recently when the party’s leadership splintered into two factions, each led by Mohammed and Damagum, following the suspension of National Legal Adviser Adeyemi Ajibade and National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba by Damagum’s faction.

In response, Ologunagba announced the suspension of Damagum and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, citing various complaints against them. A Federal High Court subsequently issued a restraining order, affirming Damagum’s position as acting national chairman until the PDP’s convention in December 2025. Abdullahi emphasized the importance of adhering to this court order and threatened to involve security agencies if it was ignored.

Mohammed, however, stated in an interview that his faction would focus on engaging with party leaders rather than responding to threats. He expressed confidence that the party’s constitutional processes would be respected and anticipated feedback from party leaders soon.

The PDP governors held an inconclusive meeting to discuss the crisis, with divisions evident among them regarding Damagum’s leadership. A faction of the governors, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, is advocating for Damagum’s removal, while others oppose it.

The situation has prompted considerations for establishing a caretaker committee to manage the party’s affairs until the current NWC’s tenure concludes in December 2025. Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, a party chieftain, characterized the ongoing turmoil as a typical power struggle rather than a crisis.
