PDP Leadership Crisis: Turaki Faction Speaks Out, Denies Backing Kebbi Governor
The factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, has denied reports that members of his faction endorsed Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, said he was unaware of the reported meeting where the alleged endorsement was said to have taken place.
Responding to an enquiry about the report, the former minister simply said, “We are not aware of the meeting.”
An online publication had reported that the purported meeting was attended by former minister Buhari Bala and retired military officer, General Ishaya Bamayi.
The two individuals were reportedly said to have facilitated discussions at the gathering, which allegedly ended with a decision to support the Idris administration in the 2027 governorship election.
The report linked the meeting to the Turaki-led faction of the PDP. However, Turaki rejected the claim, insisting that neither he nor members of his faction had knowledge of the gathering.
“We are not aware of the meeting. ‘Shirmen banaza ne’,” he said.
The Hausa expression was used by Turaki to further dismiss the reported meeting and any resolution allegedly reached during the gathering.
The denial comes amid the prolonged leadership crisis and factional divisions within the PDP as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The opposition party has remained divided into different camps over its leadership and internal affairs, with rival factions continuing to pursue separate political strategies ahead of the elections.
In Kebbi State, neither the Nyesom Wike-led camp nor the Turaki faction has officially announced a candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The reported endorsement of Governor Idris had therefore attracted attention, particularly against the backdrop of uncertainty over who will eventually emerge as the PDP’s candidate in the state.
However, Turaki’s categorical denial means that the reported endorsement cannot, at this stage, be attributed to his faction.
