The impeachment of former Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, has intensified divisions within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, sparking disagreements among key party members over his removal.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Since Obasa’s impeachment on January 13, 2025, over allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement, tensions within the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the APC’s highest decision-making body in the state, have grown.

The rift became more pronounced when two GAC members, Senator Anthony Adefuye and Muraina Taiwo, publicly criticized the impeachment process. Their objections were swiftly dismissed by senior APC leader, Musiliu Obanikoro, who labeled their concerns as “childish and inconsequential.”

In an interview with Punch, Adefuye questioned the legitimacy of Obasa’s removal, calling the process flawed and politically driven.

“The lawmakers’ actions are illegal. It’s a blatant disregard for leadership. The GAC is divided on this issue, but we will defer to our leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to resolve the crisis,” Taiwo wrote in a WhatsApp message.

However, Obanikoro swiftly responded, urging party leaders to avoid jumping to conclusions.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State House of Assembly has stated that Obasa’s return to the House is anticipated before they take further steps, which may include a formal investigation into the allegations against him.

As the APC faces internal strife, opposition parties in Lagos have signaled their readiness to embrace Obasa, should he decide to leave the ruling party.

Benedict Tai, Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, confirmed on Friday that the party would consider accepting Obasa, contingent on thorough background checks.

“If we accept him into the party, we will ensure proper checks and balances, as no one can simply join and demand a position. The person must have invested time and loyalty to the party. We need to be certain that he’s not coming to cause disruption, as others have in the past,” he explained.

Tai also mentioned that the PDP welcomed the APC’s internal crisis and plans to leverage it in efforts to regain ground in the state.
