PDP Members Are Now Political Refugees – Gov. Abiodun Mocks Opposition

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has taken a sharp jab at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), likening its members to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) desperately seeking political refuge.

The governor made this remark on Wednesday during a reception in Abeokuta to welcome several former PDP leaders and members who have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abiodun described the PDP as a hollow version of its former self, weakened by a wave of defections to the ruling party.

Among those who crossed over to the APC were Adekunle Akinlade, the PDP’s 2023 deputy governorship candidate; former PDP state chairman Dr. Sikirullahi Ogundele; Deputy Minority Leader of the State House of Assembly, Lukman Atobatele; and former Assembly Chief Whip, Idowu Olowofuja.

Other notable defectors include Dr. Mojeed Ekelojumati, ex-ALGON Chairman, and Rotimi Rahman (a.k.a. Arugbo), former Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government.

“The PDP has become an empty shell across Nigeria. In fact, its members now resemble Internally Displaced Persons, roaming in search of shelter. They’ve tried the SDP and ADC without success. They remain politically homeless,” Abiodun remarked.

The governor echoed comments made by Ogundele, stating that all serious-minded PDP members in Ogun have already abandoned the party, with many now returning to what he called their “true political home.”

“I’m happy you’ve decided to return to where you belong,” he told the new APC members.

Welcoming the defectors, Governor Abiodun promised they would be treated as equals within the APC, commending them as experienced and progressive individuals who would bring value to the party.

“You’re welcome. You’re leaders with vision and purpose. In the APC, you’ll be respected, and your rights and positions fully acknowledged,” he assured.

Speaking on behalf of the new joiners, Akinlade—who contested the 2019 governorship under the Allied Peoples Movement (APM)—expressed appreciation to Abiodun for his inclusive leadership.

“We are here to support you, Your Excellency, and to pledge our full loyalty to you and the party,” he said.

He added that the governor had handled the defection process with dignity and fairness.

This mass defection marks a significant realignment in Ogun’s political terrain, tightening the APC’s grip as the opposition continues to fragment ahead of the 2027 elections.
