Okonkwo voiced optimism that a coalition would eventually emerge for the 2027 presidential race, though he admitted uncertainty about who would spearhead it.
The former spokesperson for the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential campaign also did not dismiss the possibility of a partnership between Labour Party candidate Peter Obi and PDP’s Atiku Abubakar.
Appearing on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Okonkwo warned that without a coalition, the 2027 election would be an easy win for Tinubu.
“Heading into 2027, I am confident a coalition will form. Whether it will involve Peter Obi and Atiku, I can’t say for sure, but one will definitely happen. Otherwise, the opposition stands no chance,” Okonkwo said.
When asked if the absence of a coalition would hand Tinubu an easy victory, he responded, “Absolutely, he would simply stroll into a second term.”
Okonkwo further stressed that in Nigeria, beyond winning elections, candidates must also “secure” their victories.
He concluded by saying that dislodging Tinubu is achievable if opposition elites rally together, similar to how they united against Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 elections.
