Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has confirmed the commencement of a forensic audit on the party’s financial accounts, as per his request.

This move follows Obi’s call for an independent audit firm to investigate the party’s finances, prompted by accusations of corruption leveled against the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, by the former National Treasurer, Oluchi Oparah.

Oparah had raised concerns about the alleged misappropriation of N3.5 billion generated from the sale of nomination forms and fundraising activities leading up to the 2023 general election.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Obi assured journalists that the findings of the audit would be made public upon its completion.

The former Governor of Anambra State emphasized the party’s commitment to transparency and accountability to both its members and the Nigerian populace regarding financial matters.

Obi stated, “Yes, we are conducting the audit. However, we will not be providing daily updates on the auditors’ progress. The findings will be disclosed only upon the conclusion of the audit process. If anyone seeks interim reports, they may approach the auditors directly.”

He acknowledged the time-consuming nature of financial investigations and assured that updates would be provided once the audit is finalized.

The Labour Party under Obi’s leadership aims to address concerns regarding the integrity of its financial management, demonstrating its dedication to upholding ethical standards within the party.
