Peter Obi Drops Major Fuel Price Promise Ahead Of 2027 Presidential Election

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has promised to moderate fuel pump prices across Nigeria if elected president in the 2027 general election.

Obi made the pledge during an interview with Arise Television on Thursday, where he also said his administration would tackle corruption within the fuel subsidy system.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the former Anambra State governor argued that corruption and inefficiencies surrounding the subsidy system had contributed to the high cost of petrol. He maintained that addressing the alleged leakages would help bring down fuel prices and reduce the burden on Nigerians.

Obi also rejected the argument that the removal of the petrol subsidy was responsible for worsening poverty in Northern Nigeria. According to him, the region’s economic challenges are linked to other factors and should be addressed through broader economic and social interventions.

He said his administration would focus on reducing the cost of living while ensuring that resources saved or recovered from the petroleum sector are properly managed for the benefit of Nigerians.

Obi has previously argued that removing the subsidy itself was necessary but criticised the manner in which the policy was implemented, saying it should have been carried out in a more organised and transparent manner.

The NDC candidate’s latest promise comes as political parties and presidential hopefuls intensify preparations for the 2027 election, with fuel prices and economic hardship expected to remain major issues among voters.
