Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has strongly condemned the recent abduction of students from Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) in Osara, Okene, Kogi State. The incident, which occurred on Thursday night, saw unidentified gunmen, suspected to be bandits, storming the school and taking away students who were preparing for their upcoming examinations.
Expressing his dismay through a statement released on his official X handle on Friday, Obi highlighted the significant setback this abduction poses to the education of children in Nigeria. He lamented that the invasion and subsequent abduction have added another layer of anguish to a nation already grappling with overwhelming insecurity.
Obi called upon the federal government to halt the perilous path of terrorism, destruction, and unnecessary loss of lives that the country seems to be treading. He urged swift and decisive action to rescue the abducted students and put an end to the menace of insecurity.
In his statement, Obi emphasized the critical importance of prioritizing the security of lives and property, particularly in the face of escalating insecurity across various sectors of the nation. He underscored that an attack on students is tantamount to an attack on education itself, further exacerbating the educational crisis in Nigeria.
The former Governor of Anambra State reiterated the urgent need for concerted efforts from the government and security agencies to ensure the safe return of the abducted students. He extended his thoughts and prayers to the affected students, their families, and the entire CUSTECH community, expressing hope for a unified and resilient national response to overcome such challenges.
