Obi expressed his support in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, describing the development as a positive humanitarian gesture.
He praised Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), and Ethiopian authorities for ensuring the successful completion of what he described as prolonged negotiations.
According to him, the agreement highlights the importance of safeguarding the rights and dignity of Nigerian citizens, wherever they may be.
However, Obi also expressed sadness over reports that at least four Nigerians died while in Ethiopian custody during the lengthy negotiation process, extending his condolences to the affected families.
“It is heartbreaking to learn that at least four Nigerian citizens lost their lives in custody while this diplomatic and administrative process dragged on over the past few years,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor noted that many of those affected were young Nigerians who were arrested while transiting through Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport in pursuit of better opportunities abroad.
While advising Nigerians to respect the laws of foreign countries, Obi stressed that the situation reflects the urgent need to address the economic pressures pushing many youths to migrate.
He called for stronger efforts to expand economic opportunities, improve education, and build a system that rewards hard work in order to reduce irregular migration and its associated risks.
Obi also urged authorities to ensure proper rehabilitation and reintegration of the returned prisoners as they complete their sentences in Nigeria.
He further encouraged the government to view the development as a reminder of the need to build a country that protects, values, and empowers its citizens.
