Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has elaborated on his decision to leave the party and join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Obi officially defected to the ADC on Wednesday in Enugu State.
In a statement shared via his account following the defection, the former Anambra State Governor emphasized that the moment calls for unity and a collective effort to rescue Nigeria from ineffective and oppressive leadership.
According to Obi, Nigeria possesses enormous potential but has been held back by weak governance and deliberate political sabotage. He stressed that the country now needs genuine leaders capable of transforming its fortunes permanently.
Explaining that his move serves the national interest, Obi urged his supporters—including members of the Obidient Movement and opposition parties nationwide—to collaborate with the ADC under the leadership of David Mark to build a better Nigeria. He emphasized that the time to act, to protect current and future generations from the cycle of poor governance, is now.
Obi wrote:
“Today in Enugu, I was joined by distinguished leaders and associates, including former Governors Okwesilieze Nwodo of Enugu State, Achike Udenwa and Sam Egwu of Ebonyi State, as well as Emeka Ihedioha of Imo State. Prominent senators in attendance included Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, and Gilbert Nnaji. We were also joined by key political figures such as High Chief Ben Obi, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, Prof. Pat Utomi, Prof. Osita Ogbu, Chief Ralph Nwosu, alongside members of the Federal and State Houses of Assembly and local community leaders.
“This historic gathering included notable leaders from outside the Igbo community, led by ADC National Chairman and former Senate President David Mark, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, former Governor of Sokoto State, and former Edo State Governor Senator Oserheimen Osunbor. Together, we reaffirmed the urgent need for leadership that recognizes Nigeria’s potential, unites its diverse population, and drives inclusive socio-economic transformation.
“In my address, I emphasized that Nigeria’s challenges are not due to a lack of resources or talent. Our people and natural endowments are abundant. The tragedy lies in deliberate sabotage by a political class that exploits the country and its citizens. We are not poor; we have been looted into poverty. Our system rewards mediocrity, punishes merit, and recycles failure. Impunity and greed define governance today, while corruption is rewarded. What Nigeria needs is authentic, patriotic leadership—not superficial reforms.
“I underscored that the time to act is now. We must choose between perpetuating decay or embracing the courage to dismantle entrenched corruption and systemic criminality. From the North to the South, East to West, including internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, Nigerians experience insecurity and despair. This cannot define our legacy. For the sake of the hungry, the marginalized, and future generations, we must rebuild the nation. A new Nigeria is possible.
“I reiterated that, with unity and effective leadership, agriculture and manufacturing can become the top contributors to our GDP. We can shift from a consumption-driven economy to a productive one, tackling insecurity, corruption, unemployment, inflation, and illiteracy. A productive and inclusive Nigeria is achievable through transparent, honest, and responsive governance. Our generation has the responsibility to establish a new framework for unity and progress. Other nations have succeeded; Nigeria can surpass them.
“This is a moment for national unity and renewal. I called on leaders, associates, supporters, the Obidient Movement, and opposition members nationwide to form a broad coalition under the African Democratic Congress, led by Senator David Mark. Guided by patriotism and national interest, this coalition seeks leadership that unites, governs empathetically, and delivers tangible results. Let history remember that Nigeria’s turning point begins today. Together, with courage, unity, and determination, we can build a productive, inclusive, and new Nigeria.”
