Peter Obi’s Representative Rejects ₦36 Million Debt Claim, Unveils Contractor’s AgendaValentine Obienyem, the Media Assistant to Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and former Governor of Anambra State, has strongly denied allegations that his principal’s administration owed a contractor ₦36 million at the end of his tenure in 2014.

The claim was made by one Ikem Okeke from the Nri community in Obi’s home local government area of Anaocha, who alleged that the Obi administration still owed him ₦36 million for a completed project.

In response to the accusation, Obienyem issued a statement in Awka, clarifying that Obi’s government had taken proactive steps to resolve any outstanding debts before the end of his tenure. Six months prior to his departure, Obi’s administration had placed Public Service Announcements in national newspapers and other media outlets, urging contractors and suppliers with unpaid claims to come forward for resolution.

Obienyem dismissed Okeke’s allegations as an attempt to discredit Obi’s successful administration, emphasizing that the Anambra government under Obi had worked with over 5,000 suppliers and contractors. He found it curious that only one individual had come forward with such a claim years after the fact.

He further pointed out that Chief Ikem Okeke’s mother had served as the Commissioner for Education during Obi’s time in office, raising questions about the potential conflict of interest, given that Obi’s policy prohibited awarding contracts to relatives of government officials.

Obienyem added that the allegation of the ₦36 million debt was well-known to the government at the time, and that the contract in question had been fully settled. He accused Okeke of trying to exploit the situation to undermine Obi’s reputation, noting that the contractor had previously sought legal action but failed to prevail in court.

“These claims are not only baseless but are part of a deliberate attempt to tarnish Obi’s image by someone now aligned with an opposing political faction,” Obienyem stated. “Mr. Obi has always acknowledged his imperfections, but his record in both public and private life remains exemplary and unmatched.
