Petit, who played for both Chelsea and Arsenal during his career, believes that Sterling’s success has actually hindered his performance. According to the Frenchman, the English forward, who joined the Gunners on loan from Chelsea, has become a victim of his own achievements.
Sterling moved to Arsenal on transfer deadline day after new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca made it clear he was not part of the club’s plans.
In an interview with Instant Casino, Petit suggested that Sterling’s lack of hunger is the result of his success and the financial rewards that come with playing for top clubs.
“Sterling has been living a nightmare for years now,” said Petit. “He’s a prime example of what can happen to a player in the Premier League who has constantly won trophies and earned a lot of money.”
“When you make so much money and win so many trophies, you stop being hungry. You lose your passion and your priorities can shift. You start enjoying life more. I wonder if Sterling had started his career differently, would he play with more fire?” Petit continued. “It was the same for me, and it’s something common to many players.
