PETROAN spokesperson Joseph Obele confirmed that NNPC Retail Ltd has set the price for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) at the Port Harcourt refinery at ₦1,030 per litre. He also stated that the product request portal for booking products has been opened.
“Our strategic pricing team is currently reviewing the best pricing options for our members, and we remain open to sourcing products from all refineries in Nigeria,” Obele said, noting that PETROAN is committed to working with all domestic refineries to ensure product availability.
PETROAN has urged NNPC Retail to consider reducing the price further to alleviate the financial burden on Nigerians, particularly during the upcoming festive season. This comes shortly after the Dangote Refinery lowered its petrol price by ₦20, bringing it to ₦970 per litre, down from ₦990.
In response to claims that the refinery was not functioning, Obele firmly stated that the old Port Harcourt refinery is indeed operational and producing refined petroleum products. On November 26, 2024, the NNPCL management, led by CEO Mele Kyari, hosted stakeholders and journalists at the plant to observe its operations firsthand.
“The old Port Harcourt refinery is currently running at 70% of its installed capacity, with plans to increase to 90% soon,” Obele said. He emphasized that the revamped refinery is not merely a blending plant, as some have suggested, but a fully operational facility.
PETROAN has direct access to the plant, thanks to authorization from NNPCL management, and encourages anyone questioning the refinery’s functionality to take a tour of the facility for clarity. Obele clarified that the old refinery, which has a capacity of 60,000 barrels per day, is the operational unit, while the new Port Harcourt refinery, which will have a capacity of 200,000 barrels per day, is still under rehabilitation and is expected to commence production soon.
The Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources, led by Sen. Kawu Sumaila, recently visited the Port Harcourt refinery on a fact-finding mission and confirmed that the plant is operational, with petroleum trucks actively loading products at the refinery depot. PETROAN’s national leadership, including National President Dr. Billy Hary, also attended the visit to show support for the ongoing operations.
Obele expressed PETROAN’s support for the planned privatization of Nigeria’s state-owned refineries, stressing that such a process should be conducted in a transparent and credible manner, with the refinery eventually handed over to a reputable private firm with the necessary financial and technical expertise.
He also raised concerns about the dangerous condition of the Eleme East-West Road, which he described as a significant threat to petroleum trucks transporting flammable products from the refinery. PETROAN has urged the Federal Ministry of Works to expedite repairs on the road to ensure the safety of transportation operations.
In conclusion, Obele reiterated PETROAN’s commitment to supporting the growth and functionality of the Port Harcourt refinery and to ensuring that petrol prices remain competitive to benefit Nigerian consumers.
