The court, presided over by Justice T.G. Ringing, handed down the verdict on Tuesday, November 26, 2024. Bature and Philip were charged with two counts of obtaining money under false pretenses, while Mohammed faced one count of the same offense. The charges stemmed from an incident in 2022, where the defendants falsely promised to secure jobs for the victims in exchange for payments.
The charges against Bature and Philip stated that they fraudulently obtained ₦970,000 from Asabe Hamed for the purpose of securing a job, which they knew was not possible. Similarly, Mohammed was accused of collecting ₦670,000 from Abdul Rahman Abubakar and Akwalo Adamu under the false pretense of providing employment with the Nigerian Immigration Service, which he also knew to be a lie.
Upon being arraigned, all three defendants pleaded guilty to the charges. Prosecution counsel, Tortema Joshua, urged the court to convict them accordingly, while defense lawyers Babangida Mohammed and K.K. Jomoh requested leniency, noting that the defendants were first-time offenders and expressed remorse for their actions.
Justice Ringing, in delivering the sentence, convicted Bature, Philip, and Mohammed to seven years in prison each or an alternative fine of ₦50,000 each. The court also ordered them to pay restitution of ₦1,640,000 to the victims and required them to sign an undertaking to be of good behavior going forward.
The case against the defendants began on February 8, 2024, when petitions were filed, accusing Bature and Philip of collecting ₦970,000 and Mohammed of receiving ₦670,000 for job placements that were never provided. Despite the payments, the victims never received the promised jobs, and the defendants failed to return the money.
