Area Comptroller of Customs for Adamawa/Taraba Command, Garba Bature Bashir, revealed that the petrol was confiscated at the Nigeria-Cameroon border while being illegally transported to Cameroon.
Currently, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) sells petrol at retail outlets in the state for N1,090 per litre, while independent marketers are charging between N1,200 and N1,300.
Bashir explained that the seized petrol came from various border points in Adamawa and Taraba States and would be auctioned immediately due to its hazardous nature, in line with the Nigerian Customs Service Act, 2023. He also noted that three vehicles used for transporting the petrol were impounded, along with other smuggled goods like flour, parboiled rice, and used clothing.
Describing smuggling as economic sabotage, the Comptroller urged those involved to cease their activities and reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to dismantling the illegal trade. A total of 33,595 litres of petrol, valued at N71,760,930, were seized.
