Protests had been ongoing, with many in the town voicing their displeasure over the festival’s cancellation, a recurring issue from last year. Social media footage showed the town engulfed in flames from the burnt tyres, with comments noting the youths’ frustration over being barred from the festival.

An anonymous source revealed that the unrest stems from a divisive kingship dispute in the town. According to the source, the government’s decision to halt the festival aimed to prevent potential violence amid the delicate peace situation.

State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, confirmed that 20 individuals have been arrested and two vehicles impounded in connection with the unrest. Alamutu explained that the local government, citing the volatile atmosphere and a recent court ruling related to the kingship issue, decided to prohibit the festival to avoid further disruptions. The arrested individuals will be processed at the state command in Abeokuta.
