In September, PUNCH Metro reported that soldiers from the 3rd Battalion of the Nigerian Army had raided an estate in Warri associated with the academy, leading to the arrest of about 123 suspects. These individuals were subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.

Edafe shared that one suspect managed to contact a family member using a laptop provided by the academy’s operators. Upon learning of the situation, the family reached out to the military, resulting in the arrests, which primarily involved teenagers.

He explained that the suspects were lured to the academy under false promises of training in Bitcoin trading and Forex, only to find themselves trapped in a notorious cybercrime network. “We are at the Ekpan Police Station, Effurun Divisional HQ, where we will parade approximately 123 suspected internet fraudsters who were engaged in cybercrime,” Edafe stated.

He further detailed the suspects’ methods, saying, “They recruit agents who flaunt wealth on social media—often not their own—to entice young men aged 17 to 20 with the promise of learning forex and crypto trading. They lure victims from places like Kaduna, Akwa Ibom, and Oyo, subjecting them to beatings and providing food only sporadically.”

In a follow-up conversation, Edafe confirmed that some of the operators had been arrested and charged in court.

One of the arrested students, Gbolahan Olaide, recounted his harrowing experience of being held captive for nine months at the academy. Olaide stated he was lured to Warri by a friend who promised to assist him financially for a trip to Cairo, Egypt. “I needed money to finalize my travel plans, so a friend invited me to Warri for help. But when I arrived, everything changed,” Olaide recounted.

He explained that he was picked up at the park and taken to a different location, where he was locked up with other victims. “They told me I couldn’t go back and forced me to learn internet fraud. They even beat me when I expressed my desire to return home,” he said, describing the brutal treatment that left him physically and mentally scarred.

Olaide described how he was coerced into participating in fraudulent activities, including hacking Facebook accounts and deceiving foreign victims into providing financial assistance under the guise of romantic relationships.

Meanwhile, Edafe assured that authorities in Warri are actively investigating the situation and that Gbolahan, along with others who endured similar treatment, would face charges in court.
