In a statement released by Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the e-CMR is described as an advanced, real-time online database of motor vehicle information. Its implementation is intended to support police investigations and operational efforts, particularly in combating vehicle-related crimes such as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery.
Transitioning to a digital system will simplify documentation and verification processes related to vehicle ownership and transactions. According to the statement, under the directives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), services including change of ownership, license number, engine, and chassis/body will become more efficient.
The e-CMR system promises to validate vehicle authenticity and ownership, enhance tracking and recovery of stolen vehicles, and prevent the unwitting purchase of stolen vehicles by prospective buyers.
The statement emphasized, “In line with the IGP’s commitment to enhance public safety and security, the Nigeria Police Force will commence enforcement of the digitalized Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) on July 29, 2024. This initiative aims to modernize and digitalize the motor vehicle registration system, bolstering our nation’s safety and security framework.”
Prior to enforcement, the IGP has mandated comprehensive public awareness campaigns about the e-CMR and its enforcement procedures. The public is encouraged to obtain their digital CMR certificates online.
The Nigeria Police Force seeks the cooperation and understanding of all citizens in implementing this initiative, affirming their dedication to leveraging technology for public safety and national security.
The enforcement of the e-CMR is deemed crucial to ensuring a safer vehicle ownership environment and curbing vehicle theft by reducing the market for stolen vehicles in the country. Vehicle owners and users are urged to embrace this initiative promptly for enhanced safety and security.
