The Take-It-Back Movement had scheduled the protest for today, April 7, 2025, citing various national issues. However, in an interview with Punch, Rufai expressed concerns that, given Sokoto’s predominantly Muslim population, the protest might be co-opted by individuals seeking to avenge the recent killings in Edo State.
Rufai stated that the police would engage with local stakeholders to persuade them not to participate in the protest. He emphasized, “We will engage community leaders to advise their members against taking part in such protests. Sokoto is a predominantly Muslim state, and the massacre in Edo is still a heated issue among the people. If the protest goes ahead, it could be seized by those looking to retaliate for the Edo killings.”
He further warned that many in the state might not distinguish between protests over governance and other grievances, stressing the importance of preventing any potential violence.
Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer in Nasarawa State, Ramhan Nansel, also issued a warning, stating that any residents who violated the law during the protest would be arrested. Nansel confirmed that the command was making the necessary security arrangements to maintain peace during the protest. “While there are no signs of violence at the moment, we are on high alert to ensure that the peace we’ve enjoyed remains intact. Anyone found causing trouble will be arrested,” he said.
