While President Tinubu embarked on a two-week working visit to France, Shettima traveled to Dakar, Senegal, to represent him at the country’s 65th Independence Day celebrations on April 4, 2025. Wabara expressed his disappointment, accusing both leaders of leaving Nigeria “headless” at a critical time.
Wabara, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees, argued that if Nigeria needed representation at the Senegal event, the task should have been delegated to the appropriate official, such as the foreign affairs minister, instead of the Vice President.
He pointed out that this is not the first instance of Tinubu and Shettima traveling simultaneously, emphasizing that it reflects a flagrant disregard for the people they swore to serve. According to Wabara, their absence during a time of national challenges is an insult to Nigeria and the offices they occupy.
He urged President Tinubu to adhere to proper governance procedures, cautioning him against turning the nation’s democracy into a global joke. Wabara said, “It is shocking that both the President and his Vice left the country simultaneously, leaving the nation without leadership. This is a clear dereliction of duty and shows a lack of respect for the Nigerian people.”
He further emphasized, “While the President has the right to travel, he should have handed over power to his Vice in an acting capacity. It is inappropriate for the Vice President to travel while the President is away. The offices of the President and Vice President should prioritize national interests above personal matters.”
Wabara condemned their travel at a time of escalating tensions in Edo, Plateau, Zamfara, Sokoto, Benue, Rivers, and Bayelsa states, as well as growing insecurity nationwide. He concluded, “By leaving the country at such a critical moment, Tinubu and Shettima have shown that they are either overwhelmed or unfit for governance, demonstrating a shocking lack of regard for Nigeria and its people.”
