Police Declare Commitment To Uphold Court Order For Kano LG ElectionsThe Kano State command of the Nigeria Police Force has announced its intention to comply with a Federal High Court order prohibiting its participation in the upcoming Local Government (LG) elections scheduled for Saturday, October 26.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This decision follows a ruling from the Federal High Court in Kano, which invalidated the election process on the grounds that card-carrying members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) were serving as executive officers of the election commission. Despite this, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has affirmed his commitment to proceed with the elections, presenting NNPP flags to the party’s 44 chairmanship and councilorship candidates at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium on Thursday evening.

In a video message to Channels Television, Superintendent of Police Abdullahi Haruna, the State Command’s Public Relations Officer, stated that the police would adhere to the court order while ensuring the protection of lives in the state. “We will comply with the court order restricting us from participation in the upcoming Kano State Local Government Election,” he said. He emphasized that their primary responsibility remains the protection of lives and property.

Haruna noted that the police command in Kano had received the court order, which explicitly states that the police should not take part in the elections. “However, it is our duty to maintain law and order, and we are committed to that responsibility,” he added.

The police commissioner, Salman Garba, has convened a meeting with key officials, including Heads of Departments and Area Commanders, to reassess strategies aimed at fulfilling the police’s constitutional mandate. Haruna stressed the importance of proactive measures to prevent and respond to security threats, directing operational commanders to enhance patrols, increase visibility in high-risk areas, and intensify intelligence gathering.

This police statement follows a ruling from the Kano State High Court, which instructed the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) to proceed with the local government elections on October 26. Justice Sanusi Ma’aji ruled that KANSIEC is legally authorized to oversee and conduct elections across all 44 local government areas in the state.
