Atiku Issues Warning Against Fuel Theft From Fallen TankersFormer Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a stern warning to Nigerians against the dangerous practice of collecting fuel from overturned tankers, deeming it life-threatening. The video depicts numerous locals using buckets and containers to gather fuel, seemingly unaware of the associated dangers. This warning comes on the heels of a tragic incident on October 16 in Jigawa’s Majiya town, where over 180 people lost their lives and many others were injured after a tanker carrying petrol exploded while individuals attempted to collect fuel.
Atiku stated, “I understand the tough times Nigerians are facing, but your lives are invaluable and should never be jeopardized.” He called for government agencies to initiate a strong public awareness campaign about the dangers of fuel extraction from fallen tankers.
He stressed that petrol is highly flammable and handling it in such unsafe conditions is akin to risking one’s life. “Your lives matter to you and your loved ones. Scooping petrol from a fallen tanker is a suicide that should never be attempted. We have seen too many tragedies, including the recent one in Cross River State, and we must do everything possible to prevent future incidents,” he added.
