SP Tunni Ayuba, the Zonal Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Friday in Lagos, stating that the arrest took place on January 31. According to Ayuba, Blessing was recommended for employment by an agent named Anthony and commenced her role as a domestic staff on December 23, 2023.
However, just three days into her employment, Blessing allegedly absconded with $51,000 and fled with her husband to Cross River State. Following a thorough investigation, the police apprehended both suspects on January 31.
The investigation revealed that Blessing provided false information to secure the job. Ayuba disclosed, “During the investigation, it was revealed that Blessing had approached Anthony under false pretenses, providing misleading contact information and using registered phone numbers not associated with her identity. She failed to complete her employment application form.”
Despite initially denying the full extent of the theft, Blessing eventually confessed to stealing $30,000 (N44,808,600) and admitted to giving $20,000 (N29,872,400) to her husband, Bassey.
Bassey, in turn, confessed to receiving the stolen funds. He reportedly used part of the money to settle his late mother’s medical bills, purchase a tipper truck, acquire two motorcycles, and complete a construction project in Cross River.
The arrested couple now faces legal consequences for their alleged involvement in the embezzlement, with the police ensuring a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
