The Delta State High Court in Asaba has issued a significant ruling, sentencing Inspector Ubi Ebri of the Nigeria Police Force to death for the murder of phone dealer Onyeka Ibeh. Presided over by Justice C. D Diai, the court found Ebri guilty of fatally shooting Ibeh during a routine police stop on April 5, 2023, as he and his wife were traveling from Ugbolu to Asaba……….. The incident occurred when the police team flagged down Ibeh’s vehicle for a search. Despite waiting patiently, they were ignored, prompting them to proceed. Angered by this, Inspector Ebri fired into their vehicle, tragically hitting Ibeh in the head. Fortunately, Ibeh’s wife, who was also present, escaped unharmed.
Following this unlawful killing, protests erupted in Asaba, demanding justice for Ibeh. The prosecution, led by Ministry of Justice Director E.H Edema, hailed the court’s decision as pivotal, emphasizing that justice has been served not only for the deceased but for society as a whole. Similarly, Ifeanyi Ibeh, the victim’s brother who witnessed the verdict, expressed gratitude to the court for bringing justice to their family.
