Police Investigate Officers In Connection With N1 Million Corps Member Extortion

Fásípè revealed that the corps members were threatened by the officers and subsequently taken to the Kafaru Oluwole Tinubu House at the Area C Police Command, where they were reportedly “robbed.” He mentioned that one corps member was targeted after failing to present a hard copy of his driver’s license, which allegedly led to the extortion.

In a video posted by PUNCH Online, one of the officers is seen asking the driver for his driver’s license. The driver replied that he was in the process of renewing it but could not provide the renewal papers in hard copy. Following this, a man in plain clothes, who did not immediately appear to be a police officer, was shown removing the vehicle’s number plate, leading to a heated exchange.

As the corps members were escorted to the police station, an accompanying officer instructed them not to use their mobile phones, warning that they would need to write statements if they did. During the encounter, one officer claimed it was an offense for the corps members to wear only their NYSC cap without the full uniform.

Fásípè tweeted, “Dear #BenHundeyin, your officers today in Surulere extorted one million naira from three corps members. They were threatened with firearms, kidnapped, and taken to the Kafaru Oluwole Tinubu House, Area C Police Command of the #LagosPoliceNG, where they were robbed. Their offense was not having a physical copy of a driver’s license. This is evil! According to the victims, the officer in mufti is the one who collected the money (their boss).”

In response, Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the state command, tweeted on Friday: “The men have been summoned, and their trial has commenced. We urge the complainants to visit the Complaint Response Unit at the state headquarters to testify at the ongoing trial.” The actions of the police officers have drawn widespread condemnation from social media users.
